“When I was first trying to write and definitely didn't know how to write a play and was feeling anxious, you told me to pay attention to the thing I wanted to write about. You told me that even though it might not be fully formed, something was there that needed to be expressed and it was okay if it didn't look like other people's plays and it was okay if it took a while to realize itself. That has stuck with me over these years. I am forever grateful, Winter.”

“I wrote the play that got me into Brown’s MFA Playwriting program in Winter’s class. They gave me precise feedback that strengthened the play’s structure and character development, encouraged my impulses around music, and reflected back all the things that were working so that I didn’t give up. I came into my own as a writer in their class. I can’t recommend it highly enough.”

“Winter is a sherpa through your unconscious. Through her exercises, her feedback, and her encouragement, she helps you unearth images, stories, characters that you never knew were inside of you. In Winter's class, I wrote the play that got me into grad school and basically transformed my life. I return to her prompts regularly as I write, and try to take her classes whenever I can.”

“Studying with Winter proved to be a turning point in my own artistic process as a writer. She encouraged me to follow my artistic instincts and I found my characters growing deeper and the stories they were telling beginning to become more nuanced. ... Winter unlocked my ability to allow characters to exist and to trust that the plot, conflict, and other mechanics would organically rise within a piece. Winter changed my whole writing life!”

Writing is simply paying attention to language, contradiction, impulse, tension, humor, and the strange ways people survive each other.

We create stories because we are so desperate to connect; it is how we locate our humanity, our empathy and it’s how we cease to be alone. There has never been a time without stories and there never will be. The rules have all been broken so take that risk; write the story only you can tell. The time is now.
