Monument Quilt

Monument Quilt

ABOUT

The Monument Quilt was a nationwide public art project centering the stories of survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence. More than 3,000 stories from survivors and allies were written, painted, and stitched onto red fabric, creating a collective monument designed to make survivors’ experiences visible in public space.

In 2019, after six years of organizing, the complete Monument Quilt came together for the first and only time on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

The installation transformed thousands of pieces of red fabric into the words “YOU ARE NOT ALONE / NO ESTÁS SOLX,” accompanied by a three-day, 24-hour healing festival.

More than 50,000 people experienced the Monument Quilt in person during its culminating display.

Winter served on the Leadership Team of FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture, helping guide the project.
